What Is Habitat for Humanity?
Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. Founded in 1976, it operates in over 70 countries and all 50 U.S. states. The organization believes everyone deserves a safe, decent, and affordable place to live.
Habitat partners with families to build or renovate homes using volunteer labor and donated materials. Families then purchase the homes through affordable mortgages or no-interest loans. This approach empowers families and promotes long-term stability in their communities.

Who Habitat for Humanity Serves
Habitat serves low-income families who lack access to affordable housing. These families often work full-time but still struggle with rising rents and poor housing conditions.
To qualify, families must demonstrate a need for housing, the ability to pay an affordable mortgage, and a willingness to partner with Habitat. This partnership includes “sweat equity”—hours of volunteer work building their own homes and supporting others.
The people served by Habitat are teachers, caregivers, service workers, and others who form the backbone of local economies. By helping these families, Habitat strengthens neighborhoods and creates healthier communities.
A Brief History of Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity was founded by Millard and Linda Fuller in Americus, Georgia. They created a “partnership housing” model focused on mutual support and affordability.
In 1984, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn began volunteering with Habitat. Their involvement helped bring national and international attention to the organization.
Since then, Habitat has helped more than 35 million people worldwide. Their work includes new construction, home repairs, and disaster recovery programs.
Camp Colorado: The Habitat Regional Conference
Every year, Habitat chapters from across the Rocky Mountain region gather for Camp Colorado, a regional conference focused on learning and collaboration. Hosted in beautiful Colorado, the event brings together staff, board members, and volunteers.
Camp Colorado features training workshops, networking events, and inspiring keynote speakers. Topics include fundraising, family services, construction best practices, and strategic planning. The conference creates a space for regional chapters to share successes, address challenges, and grow stronger together.
Participants leave energized, with new tools to expand their impact in their home communities.
