Boiler Mag Installation

Improving System Health with Boiler Mag Installation at EVstudio

Hydronic heating systems work best when the water inside stays clean. Even small amounts of debris can cause major issues. To protect our boilers and maintain peak performance, EVstudio recently installed a Boiler Mag magnetic filter in our own building.

What Is a Boiler Mag?

A Boiler Mag is a magnetic filtration device used in hydronic heating and cooling systems. It captures iron oxide, rust, and other magnetic particles that form inside closed water loops. These contaminants come from corrosion or poor water quality.

Without filtration, these particles can clog pumps, valves, and heat exchangers. A Boiler Mag helps stop that damage before it starts.

How a Boiler Mag Works

The device uses a strong magnet to attract and hold metallic debris as water circulates through it. The magnet collects iron-based particles that normal strainers often miss.

Many units also include a mesh filter to trap non-magnetic sludge. During maintenance, technicians simply remove the captured debris, clean the chamber, and reassemble the unit. This simple process keeps the water clean and flowing efficiently.

Why Use a Boiler Mag?

Boiler Mags protect valuable mechanical equipment from internal wear and corrosion. They reduce maintenance costs and improve system reliability. Clean water means better heat transfer and lower energy use.

Additionally, magnetic filtration helps extend the lifespan of pumps, heat exchangers, and piping. For any hydronic system, it’s a smart and cost-effective preventive measure.

EVstudio’s Boiler Mag Installation

During our recent boiler upgrade, EVstudio partnered with Tolin Mechanical for installation and commissioning. The new boilers and Boiler Mag unit were supplied by Shamrock Sales, Inc., who provided excellent product support.

Because our building’s water quality has historically been poor, adding a Boiler Mag was essential. It provides an extra layer of protection for our new boilers and helps maintain system efficiency.

Monitoring Water Quality and System Health

As part of our ongoing preventive maintenance program, EVstudio will monitor the particulate matter collected in the Boiler Mag. Tracking this data helps us understand the rate of corrosion and system cleanliness.

Over time, this information will guide future maintenance and water treatment adjustments. Continuous monitoring ensures our heating system performs reliably and efficiently for years to come.

The Bottom Line

Installing a Boiler Mag is a simple but powerful way to protect hydronic systems. It captures debris, reduces wear, and saves energy. At EVstudio, we’re proud to apply the same engineering principles we recommend to our clients—starting with our own building.
