Commercial interior design is one of those professions people think they understand—until you ask them to explain it. After years in the industry, I still get the occasional, “So… you pick paint colors and furniture?” Thanks, HGTV.
In reality, commercial interior design is far more technical, strategic, and integrated into the building process than most people realize.
Interior Design Is Not Decorating
Commercial interior design is not decorating.
Decorating is typically completed after construction to add artwork, decorative objects, and furniture to a space. Interior design, on the other hand, is a critical part of the design and construction process itself.
It involves:

- Cabinetry detailing
- Finish specifications
- Understanding how people will actually use a space
How Interior Design Works with Architecture
The interior design process often overlaps heavily with architecture.

On tenant improvements or non-structural remodels, interior designers may even lead the entire process independently. State legislation is also moving toward granting increased autonomy to NCIDQ-certified interior designers, allowing them to stamp their own drawings for qualifying projects without the oversight of a licensed architect.
Why Both Architects and Interior Designers Matter
So if there is overlap, why have both architects and interior designers?
Because specialization matters.
Architects are experts in building systems, structural principles, and overall shell construction and detailing. Interior designers focus intensely on how a space functions, feels, and performs for the end user.
Could architects handle interior detailing? Absolutely.
Could interior designers excel in some aspects of site planning and shell detailing? Often, yes.
But the best projects happen when each discipline focuses on what they do best. The integration of the two creates a powerful collaboration.

That collaboration matters more than people think.
