Understanding BACnet Controllers in Commercial Hydronic Heating Systems
Modern commercial buildings rely on smart control systems to operate efficiently. BACnet controllers play a key role in managing hydronic heating systems. BACnet stands for Building Automation and Control Network.
Recently, EVstudio upgraded its building’s boilers and control systems, with equipment supplied by Carrier West.
What Is a BACnet Controller?
A BACnet controller is a digital device that communicates with heating system equipment. It uses a standard communication protocol used in building automation systems to allow devices like HVAC equipment, boilers, pumps, sensors, and other equipment to communicate and work together seamlessly, regardless of manufacturer.
This standard ensures interoperability, remote monitoring, and efficient centralized control in modern commercial buildings. This also ensures devices from different manufacturers can work together seamlessly.
How BACnet Controllers Work
Controllers collect data from sensors monitoring temperature, pressure, and flow. They then adjust equipment operation in real time.
For example, the controller can modulate a boiler’s output based on demand or shut off pumps when zones reach setpoints.
They also communicate system status to a building management system (BMS), enabling remote monitoring and control.
Why They’re Used in Commercial Systems
BACnet controllers improve efficiency, comfort, and reliability. They reduce energy waste by optimizing boiler firing and pump operation.
They also simplify maintenance, allowing technicians to diagnose issues remotely. Additionally, standardized communication ensures flexibility for future upgrades.
EVstudio’s System Upgrade
During our recent boiler upgrade, EVstudio replaced aging boilers and outdated controls. Carrier West supplied the new BACnet control system.
The new controllers integrate seamlessly with boilers, sensors, and pumps, as well as the buildings HVAC system. They provide real-time monitoring and precise system adjustments.

The Benefits of BACnet Control
The BACnet system delivers consistent heating and energy savings. It reduces wear on mechanical equipment by avoiding unnecessary cycling.
Furthermore, it allows EVstudio to track performance data and plan preventive maintenance effectively.
Overall, BACnet controllers enhance system intelligence and operational efficiency in modern commercial hydronic systems.
Looking Forward
EVstudio continues to implement smart building solutions in our own facilities. Using BACnet controllers demonstrates our commitment to efficiency, reliability, and long-term system performance.
