Double Tapping and Double Lugging in Electrical Panels

Understanding Double Tapping and Double Lugging in Electrical Panels

Double tapping and double lugging are common electrical issues that can create serious safety hazards if left uncorrected. These conditions often arise in older electrical panels or during unpermitted modifications.

What Is Double Tapping and Double Lugging?

Double tapping occurs when two conductors are connected to a single circuit breaker terminal. Most breakers are designed to hold only one wire unless explicitly rated for two. Double lugging, on the other hand, involves placing multiple wires under a single lug in a panel, such as at the neutral or ground bar. These practices may seem minor but can compromise electrical safety and reliability.

What the Code Says

The National Electrical Code (NEC), specifically NEC 110.14(A), requires terminals to be used only as identified for the number of conductors. If a breaker or lug is not listed for more than one conductor, double tapping or double lugging violates code. Additionally, NEC 408.41 requires each neutral conductor to terminate on its own individual terminal.

Risks of Double Tapping and Double Lugging

These improper connections can lead to:

  • Loose connections over time

  • Overheating at the terminals

  • Arcing or electrical fires

  • Tripped breakers or inconsistent system performance

Homeowners and building managers should take these risks seriously. Additional risk is introduced if strand in the cable are cut in order to force fit the double lug as shown below.

How to Fix the Problem

Fixing a double tap usually involves:

  • Installing a tandem breaker (if allowed by the panel)

  • Adding a subpanel for circuit expansion

  • Using a breaker approved for two wires

Correcting a double lug often means adding more lugs or using a properly rated terminal bar. These fixes are generally low to moderate in cost. However, they must be performed by a licensed electrician to ensure compliance and safety.
