Fire Extinguisher Requirements During Construction

The International Building Code specifies several locations where contractors are required to have fire extinguishers placed during construction, alteration and demolition. They should be located at each stairwell on levels with accumulated combustible materials. Fire extinguishers are required in every storage and construction shed. In addition they are to be provided at any other special hazard area including where flammable or combutible liquids are being used or stored.

After construction the required locations are determined by the International Fire Code and it is advisable to review locations with the local fire marshal especially where you plan to install recessed cabinets. Typical locations include the access to stairwells, kitchens, garages, machine rooms and storage areas with hazardous materials.
