As part of Colorado’s dry climate, local fire districts have some authority over the county’s oversite in enforcing our adopted building codes and have special requirements depending on the fire district for which a building is being built. For example, on a recent residential project we designed, an exterior flat roof for a dry deck assembly using EPDM (a commonly used water proofing material) must have a fire resistent material to be applied below the application of the EPDM. There are a number of options for this assembly and it is most economically solved using type ‘x’ fire rated gypsum board.
