Commercial real estate professionals often network in conference rooms. However, some of the best conversations happen outdoors. The annual Skiing with the Icons event proves that business relationships thrive on the slopes.
Hosted by the NAIOP Colorado Developing Leaders program, this unique winter gathering combines skiing, mentorship, and industry networking. This year’s event brought professionals together at the legendary slopes of Arapahoe Basin Ski Area.
Among the attendees was EVstudio’s Mike Nickel, Multifamily Studio Director. He joined other commercial real estate professionals for a day of skiing, conversation, and industry connection.
A Unique Commercial Real Estate Networking Event
Each year, the Developing Leaders program from NAIOP Colorado hosts the Winter Classic: Skiing with the Icons. The event connects emerging professionals with experienced leaders across the commercial real estate industry.
Participants ski or snowboard alongside seasoned professionals known as “Icons.” These icons represent many sectors, including development, finance, architecture, and construction.
As a result, attendees gain valuable mentorship in a relaxed mountain setting.
Unlike traditional conferences, the format encourages natural conversations. Chairlift rides, ski runs, and lodge breaks spark discussions about projects, industry trends, and career paths.
Consequently, many participants build relationships that extend well beyond the event.

A Day on the Slopes
The event began early in the morning with registration and breakfast networking. Participants then headed to the mountains for a full day of skiing and conversation.
The schedule balanced recreation with professional engagement throughout the day:
-
Morning networking and introductions
-
Group skiing and snowboarding sessions
-
Small-group conversations with industry icons
-
Lunch discussions at the lodge
-
Afternoon runs across the mountain
-
Après-ski networking to close the event
Because of this structure, participants could easily move between skiing and professional conversations.
Moreover, the mountain environment encouraged authentic connections that often feel harder to create in formal settings.
EVstudio Representation on the Mountain
EVstudio proudly participated in this year’s Skiing with the Icons event through the attendance of Mike Nickel, Multifamily Studio Director.
Mike works closely with developers and owners to design innovative multifamily communities across the region. His work focuses on creating housing that balances design, livability, and long-term value.
During the event, Mike connected with peers, emerging leaders, and experienced professionals throughout the industry. Conversations ranged from multifamily development trends to the evolving needs of Colorado communities.
Events like Skiing with the Icons provide a valuable opportunity to strengthen relationships within the commercial real estate community.
Building Relationships Beyond the Office
Skiing with the Icons highlights an important reality in commercial real estate. Strong relationships drive successful projects.
While conferences and meetings remain valuable, shared experiences often build deeper connections.
On the mountain, professionals engage in relaxed conversations while enjoying Colorado’s outdoor environment. These discussions often lead to new partnerships, mentorship opportunities, and future collaborations.
Furthermore, the event encourages professionals from different disciplines to exchange ideas and perspectives.
That cross-industry dialogue helps drive innovation across the built environment.
Supporting the Next Generation of CRE Leaders
The event also supports the Developing Leaders program at NAIOP Colorado.
This initiative focuses on professionals under 35 who want to grow their careers in commercial real estate. The program provides mentorship, education, and networking opportunities throughout the year.
Skiing with the Icons plays a central role in that mission. By connecting emerging professionals with established industry leaders, the event helps strengthen Colorado’s commercial real estate community.
Looking Ahead
The continued success of Skiing with the Icons demonstrates the value of creative networking opportunities.
Industry professionals gain insight, build relationships, and experience Colorado’s world-class outdoor culture.
For EVstudio, participation reflects a broader commitment to collaboration and engagement within the commercial real estate industry.
After all, some of the most productive conversations do not happen in boardrooms. Sometimes, they begin on a chairlift. 🏔️⛷️
