EVstudio is proud to celebrate the completion of Sawtooth, the second phase of an impactful residential development in Gunnison, Colorado. This new apartment complex builds upon the foundation laid by phase one—featuring duplexes—and continues to support the county’s growing housing needs.
Over the course of approximately 20 months, EVstudio provided architectural and structural engineering services for the Sawtooth project. As a continuation of Gunnison County’s development initiative, Sawtooth offers thoughtfully designed housing solutions in a unique and modern package.
One of the standout features of the project is the use of a rainscreen fiber cement panel system—a material that is not only durable and low maintenance, but also contributes to the building’s sleek, modern aesthetic. EVstudio also designed an innovative open/close canopy concept, offering covered entry access while keeping areas like bike storage more open and functional. Another notable feature is the enclosed rooftop access, which replaces a traditional hatch with a more accessible and visually cohesive rooftop structure.
The design team paid special attention to materiality, using a mix of textures including fiber cement and corrugated metal wall panels. The sloped parapets add a subtle but striking illusion of movement across the building’s profile, elevating the overall architectural interest. These details, along with the clever use of vertical and horizontal lines, make Sawtooth a visually engaging and highly functional space.
Sawtooth was brought to life through strong collaboration with trusted project partners, including Fading West, Building Systems, Fading West Construction, Gunnison County, and Tributary Development. Our working relationship with Fading West spans over three and a half years, and their contributions—along with the efforts of all involved—have been instrumental in the success of this development.
With the completion of Sawtooth, Gunnison County is now able to increase its residential occupancy, marking another step forward in its community growth goals. EVstudio is proud to have played a role in bringing this vision to life and looks forward to many more collaborative projects in the future.
