EVstudio Hosts Lunch & Learn Featuring EcoStar Roofing: A Sustainable Roofing Solution Built for Performance

EVstudio recently hosted a Lunch & Learn with EcoStar Roofing to explore innovative roofing solutions for architects, engineers, and design professionals. The presentation highlighted how EcoStar combines authentic aesthetics with modern performance. Attendees learned how the company’s synthetic roofing products solve common specification challenges while supporting sustainable design goals.

A Legacy of Innovation

EcoStar has built its reputation on innovation and quality. Founded in 1969, the company initially focused on serving the New England market, where natural slate has long been the preferred roofing material. The company installed its first synthetic roof in 1993. Since then, EcoStar has continued refining its products to deliver the appearance of natural roofing materials without many of their drawbacks. Today, architects and engineers can specify roofing systems that replicate the look of real slate, cedar shake, concrete tile, and other premium materials while improving durability and simplifying installation. Designed to Look Beautiful First

EcoStar believes appearance comes first. Every product is designed to capture the authentic character of natural roofing materials. The company offers synthetic slate, shake, and concrete profiles today. New clay tile products and a designer tile series are also on the horizon. These specialty options will include heritage profiles, chisel-point edges, beveled edges, and custom architectural details. As a result, designers can preserve historic character while gaining modern performance. The finished roof looks remarkably authentic. However, it weighs far less than natural slate or concrete.

Helping Architects and Engineers Solve Real Challenges

EcoStar products help architects and engineers overcome several common roofing issues. Natural slate creates significant structural loads because of its weight. EcoStar products dramatically reduce those loads while maintaining the same visual appeal. Therefore, designers may reduce structural demands without sacrificing aesthetics. Installation also becomes easier. Traditional slate and shake materials frequently crack, splinter, or break during transportation and installation. EcoStar products resist damage during shipping because they are far more flexible. Installers also appreciate how easily the material cuts. Specialty cuts become much simpler because the roofing material does not splinter like natural products. This flexibility helps reduce waste while improving installation efficiency.

Sustainability Built into Every Roof

Sustainability has always remained central to EcoStar’s manufacturing process. In fact, the product began as a recycled roofing solution. Today, EcoStar manufactures its roofing products using up to 80 percent post-industrial upcycled materials. The company diverts millions of pounds of scrap rubber and plastic from landfills every year.

Interestingly, in the past recycling source came from a diaper manufacturing. During diaper production, manufacturers punch D-shaped cutouts from layered materials for when babies legs would go into the diaper. EcoStar repurposes these otherwise discarded materials into roofing products instead of allowing them to become waste. Unlike natural slate or cedar shake, EcoStar products require no trees to be harvested and no stone to be quarried. Consequently, projects can reduce environmental impacts while maintaining premium architectural aesthetics.

Built to Handle Colorado’s Harsh Climate

Colorado presents unique roofing challenges. Intense sunlight, hailstorms, wildfire concerns, and rapid weather changes demand resilient roofing systems. EcoStar addresses these challenges through thoughtful material engineering. The products include UV stabilizers and additional protective additives that help each roof age gracefully over time. The rubber core also contributes to long-term durability. While every roofing product changes with sun exposure, EcoStar’s material often develops a richer appearance as it naturally weathers.

The roofing systems also shed rain effectively while resisting severe storms, fire exposure, and hail damage. EcoStar products carry both Class A and Class C fire ratings, making them excellent options for many Colorado projects where fire performance remains an important design consideration. Additional information about fire classifications is available from UL Solutions at https://www.ul.com/.

Proven Performance Against Hail

One presentation example demonstrated EcoStar’s impressive hail resistance. At Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming, approximately 16 buildings received EcoStar roofing while competing products covered neighboring buildings. During a severe storm, the area experienced hailstones reaching four inches in diameter.

According to the presentation, the EcoStar roofs remained intact while the competing roofs sustained extensive damage. This real-world performance reflects the product’s Class 4 impact rating, the highest available impact resistance classification for roofing materials. For designers working throughout Colorado and other hail-prone regions, this performance offers valuable peace of mind.

Low Maintenance Throughout the Roof’s Life

Maintenance often becomes a hidden cost with traditional roofing materials. Natural slate roofs frequently require ongoing repairs as individual pieces crack or loosen. Wood shake roofs often require continued maintenance to preserve their fire resistance and appearance. EcoStar products require virtually no routine maintenance. As a result, owners benefit from lower lifecycle costs while maintaining the building’s architectural character. This reduced maintenance also minimizes long-term disruptions for occupied buildings.

Certified Quality

EcoStar reinforces product quality through recognized industry certifications. The company has maintained ISO certification since 1997, demonstrating that its manufacturing processes follow documented and monitored quality systems.

EcoStar products also carry UL certification, providing third-party verification through audited testing and manufacturing standards. These certifications help architects, engineers, and owners specify roofing systems with greater confidence.

Bringing Performance and Design Together

The Lunch & Learn demonstrated that roofing materials no longer require a choice between beauty and performance. EcoStar successfully replicates the appearance of premium natural materials while delivering lighter weight, exceptional durability, simplified installation, and meaningful sustainability benefits.

For architects and engineers, these advantages help solve common design challenges without compromising project goals. Whether specifying roofs for historic renovations, custom homes, commercial buildings, or institutional facilities, EcoStar provides a compelling solution that performs as impressively as it looks.

EVstudio appreciates EcoStar Roofing for sharing its expertise and showcasing how innovative materials continue shaping the future of sustainable building design.
