On behalf of the Colorado Chapters of the U.S. Green Building Council and the Emerging Green Builders (EGB), it is our pleasure to announce the 2009 Colorado Natural Talent Design Competition and to invite you to attend our Kick-off Event on January 28th!Please pass the following information on to your firms, committees, classes or anyone that would be interested in participating!! EGB members are also available to give a presentation about the competition and to answer any questions. We strongly encourage all disciplines and attendance at the kick off meeting for anyone interested or semi interested in signing up. Please see the attached information.

The winners of this year’s competition will receive prizes that include cash prizes, publicity of their designs as well as travel and the opportunity to represent Colorado in the National Natural Talent Design Competition at the Greenbuild Conference and Expo in Pheonix, AZ in November 2009*. We are very excited about the project for this year which is the design of a new building for the University of Colorado at Denver’s College of Architecture and Planning! The new building will not only establish the identity for the University of Colorado Neighborhood on the Auraria Campus Master Plan but may also become the new face for sustainability and the future of Colorado!

Colorado is home to some of the most prominent pioneers and leaders of the sustainability movement. The Colorado Emerging Green Builders strive to build upon this legacy and become the pioneers and leaders of the future of sustainability. This will be Colorado’s 5th year of participation in the National Natural Talent Design Competition. The national program has “gone local” since 2006 and the Colorado competition programs have included projects benefiting the local community such as the campus design for the Sustainable Settings Institute in Carbondale, Solar Energy International (also in Carbondale) as well as a 120,000 square foot addition to The Alliance Center in downtown Denver’s historic Lodo neighborhood. The Colorado team won a National Honorable Mention for Systems Innovation in 2006 and has entered well designed, competitive projects every year to the national competition. The competition is open to teams of “emerging professionals” of up to 3 individuals for a single discipline and up to 5 team members for a multi-disciplinary project. Emerging professionals are students or professionals involved in the design of the built environment who are within 5 years of graduation. Past participants have included architects, engineers, interior designers, landscape architects, and urban planners. As sustainability is inherently synergistic, we are strongly encouraging the formation of multi-disciplinary teams and will host an additional ‘Mixer’ for potential team members to meet one another following the Kick-Off Event.

We would like to ask if you would join us in support of your Colorado Emerging Green Builders and the future of sustainability in Colorado. There are several great ways in which to participate! Teams are now forming and all Emerging Professionals are encouraged to register a team or attend the Kick-Off Event and Mixer if interested in forming a team. Please encourage the Emerging Professionals at your firm to participate or form a firm sponsored team of Emerging Professionals! In addition, we are also looking for firms to sponsor competition events including our lecture series in conjunction with the University of Colorado College of Architecture and Planning, our competition Design Charrettes or the Entry Presentations and Awards Event that will wrap up the competition.

Regardless of how you would like to participate in this year’s competition, we encourage you to keep an eye on the competition and the exciting events that we have planned! Please attend the Kick-Off Event on January 28th to learn more about the competition and the project or to meet past competitors. You can also remain informed about the competition or register your team through our web-site at http://www.usgbccolorado.com/committees/naturaltalentdesign.html. You may also email tina.alberico@gmail.com if you have any questions.

We appreciate your support and interest in the Emerging Green Builders and the Colorado Natural Talent Design Competition for 2009 and are looking forward to seeing you around!
