Designing Outside the Lines: Our Studio Golf Outing
At EVstudio, we spend our days obsessing over clean drawings, precise structural calculations, and the delicate balance of form and function. But last month, we traded our CAD software for something a little more unpredictable: an 18-hole golf course. Our team-building golf outing was set. As it turned out, though, Mother Nature had her own radical redesign in mind for our afternoon.

Why We Needed a Day on the Green
We had all eagerly anticipated this team-building excursion. Architecture is inherently collaborative. Yet our daily routines often keep us isolated behind dual monitors. Some of us are deep in schematic design, others are managing permits, and a few are knee-deep in structural loads.
Stepping onto the green gave us a chance to relax, breathe some fresh air, and connect outside the office.
When the Weather Gods Stepped In
Of course, the weather gods decided to test our resilience. Just as we began, a gentle mist escalated into a steady, persistent downpour. For a group of people who literally design buildings to keep water out, standing unprotected in the middle of a sprawling fairway was a poetic irony.
Yet there was something genuinely liberating about it. Golf, much like architecture, is a game of strategy, physics, and managing variables you cannot control: wind speed, slope, and now, heavy rain.
Swings grew a bit more cautious. Putts slid past rain-slicked cups, and laughter echoed across the soggy fairways. We didn’t break any course records, and our golf shoes will probably never look the same.
But nobody packed it in. Instead, we embraced the weather, leaned into the absurdity, and pushed through to the 18th hole, soaked but sharing plenty of high-fives.
Refueling at Tap and Burger
After battling the elements, we were more than ready for a change of venue. So we traded the soggy fairways for a booth at Tap and Burger. There, we dove into a spread of queso and chips, pretzel bites, and the best cheese curds in Westminster.
What Our Team-Building Golf Outing Taught Us
Good architecture is built on a foundation of trust, communication, and shared vision. Surviving a rainy day on the golf course and bonding over post-game appetizers proved our team can handle whatever elements come our way. That includes a structural challenge on a complex build or an unexpected cloudburst.
Cheers to many more adventures together, rain or shine!
